Ontario's police watchdog has been called in after an Ottawa Police operation on Walkley Road, in the capital's south end.

Ottawa police have not said why they were initially called to a home on Walkley Road, near Heron, Wednesday afternoon.

Police tape and several police vehicles could be seen in front of homes on the north side of Walkley Road for several hours before police confirmed that the province's Special Investigations Unit had invoked its mandate.

The SIU investigates when civilians are injured or killed during an interaction with the police, as well as allegations against police of sexual assault and when an officer discharges a firearm at a person.

Police closed the westbound lanes of Walkley Road, from Conroy to Heron, for the investigation. Officers also closed another street, in a nearby industrial park, blocking St. Laurent Boulevard westbound between Conroy Road and Don Reid Drive.
