Sens honour local linesman’s 1,000th NHL game

By Alex Robinson

While many were focused on Erik Karlsson's return to the nation's capital Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa Senators honoured a local linesman for his 1,000th NHL game.

Derek Nansen, who was honoured in a pregame ceremony, first put on a referee jersey in Kanata at the age of 11. So it was a special homecoming for him to be able to mark the achievement in his hometown rink.

Nansen told 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show he can't really believe he's made it to the milestone.

“Back in the day, I didn't even think I was going to be in the National Hockey League and here I am 1,000 games later,” he said.

Nansen was selected to work at the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 before the NHL came calling and asked him to come to their scouting camp that summer.
