Three dogs killed, three people injured in Britannia duplex fire

By Alex Black

Three dogs have been killed in a fire in Britannia.

Just after 1 a.m., fire crews responded to a 911 call reporting visible smoke in one side of a two-storey duplex at 2700 Howe St.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke on the ground floor around the kitchen, and a working fire was declared.

The fire extended to the exterior of the second floor and into the attic before the fire was contained at 1:52 a.m.

Three people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three dogs were found dead at the scene.

The estimated damage is $100,000.

The three occupants have been left homeless by the fire, while the adjoining unit is habitable.

There is no word yet on a cause and a fire investigator is responding.
