Two years after fire by arson, Lincoln Fields Wendy’s sets sights on rebuild

By Dani-Elle Dubé

The Wendy’s fast food restaurant that was located at Lincoln Fields and had burned down in November 2018 is rebuilding.

Bay Ward city councillor Theresa Kavanagh confirmed the news on her website Friday, saying she had been informed by RIOCAN that the real estate company is applying for their building permit early in the new year.

The company plans to start construction on the location at 2545 Carling Ave. in the spring (April 2021).

“They did not confirm an exact reopening date (that is up to Wendy’s), but it typically takes about 6 months to construct a building of that size, so RIOCAN anticipates that they would be open next October,” Kavanagh said.

The restaurant’s fire was determined to be the result of arson.

Paramedics treated a few people at the scene while some were sent to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

After an investigation, Ottawa police charged a then 28-year-old man named Steven Hanssen with arson endangering life, arson damage to property and breaching his court release conditions.
