Election Day in Ottawa

By Jason White

This is the day voters in Ottawa decide who will lead our city for the next four years, and whether the capital should stay the course or change direction.

After it appeared Mayor Jim Watson may have faced a cake-walk to a third consecutive term, Clive Doucet laid out a competing vision, held Watson to account on his record, and offered voters a stronger choice than they might have otherwise had.

But even if you haven't found the mayoral race very exciting, some council races are compelling. Four incumbents are not running for re-election, leaving a wide-open field in Bay, Innes, Kanata North and Orleans wards.

The total number of new faces around the council table could end up being higher, with six wards seeing competitive races. The current councillors for Alta Vista, Capital, Gloucester-South Nepean, Rideau-Vanier, River and Stittsville wards all face strong challengers.

Polls are open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.; voters will be allowed to cast their ballot as long as they're in the polling place by 8 p.m. Click here for information on where, how and when to vote.

Special election results coverage, hosted by Mark Sutcliffe, will air tonight on 1310 NEWS and ROGERStv, beginning at 8 p.m.
