Ottawa police investigating TikTok video of officers allegedly laughing about beating someone up

By Mike Vlasveld

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) says its Professional Standards Section is investigating a video in which a TikTok user claims two officers are having a laugh about beating someone up.

A man named Matt sent CityNews a link to his video of two Ottawa police vehicles sitting outside of his Airbnb on York Street.

In it, a somewhat muffled conversation is audible, which Matt says was happening between the officers who's driver-side windows can be seen facing each other.

He says he started recording because he heard what he thought were “racial comments.” He then believes he caught one of the officers saying, “We got over there and we just started being the shit out of him.”

In the video, which has been shared more than 1,100 times as of Thursday, December 24, Matt shares the unit numbers of the police vehicles.

Although there has been no formal complaint filed regarding the alleged incident, OPS says, “We take this issue very seriously as it potentially undermines public trust and confidence in the Ottawa Police Service.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact the Professional Standards Section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5830.
