Police charge two after another Barrhaven Canada Day incident

By Mike Vlasveld

Despite more security planning and an increased police presence at Clarke Fields Park on Strandherd Drive for Canada Day, Ottawa police officers were again facing social disorder and breaking up fights.

According to OPS officials, a large group of people was spotted at the park around 9 p.m. Some of those people soon began to surround the officers in an attempt to intimidate them.

Extra police officers were dispatched to the area in order to disperse the group, but during that effort there were several fights that officers had to break up.

Two men were then arrested for lighting off fireworks. Police say one of the accused was shooting fireworks from a moving vehicle toward a crowd.

At the end of the event, officers had to break up another large fight near the park's main entrance.

The OPS says it will continue to work with Barrhaven Canada Day organizers to continue to enhance security planning for future events.

Anyone with information about individuals with plans to disrupt future family-friendly events are asked to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at crimestoppers.ca.
