How to pick the right rental apartment: Start with the right neighbourhood

By Danae Ingram

The city of Ottawa has so many great neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character and flavour.

For students in search of rental accommodations, proximity to school is usually at the top of their wish list, so looking at the closest neighbourhoods surrounding your campus makes the most sense.

The Sandy Hill neighbourhood stands out for several reasons. It is located in the centre of town and surrounds the University of Ottawa. Made up mostly of leafy residential streets, the area is full of interesting shops, coffee houses and restaurants that offer student-friendly pricing.

Lots of local attractions are close at hand as well, including the always popular ByWard Market, the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River. Active, outdoorsy types will especially love the proximity to so much green space. It’s a very walkable, bikeable neighbourhood and it’s easy to access other points in the city, especially throughout the downtown core.

Making the most of the city

Students deserve to enjoy the city’s tourist attractions too.

Because you are right in the heart of the city, you’re also close to the Rideau Centre, Elgin Street, Bank Street and Centretown. Getting to and from school is a breeze, yet you’re also surrounded by countless opportunities to work, play, exercise and take advantage of the city’s thriving dining, shopping, arts and entertainment scenes.

The Sandy Hill neighbourhood has a fun and lively atmosphere that also happens to be the centre of the city’s nightlife, with a happening bar scene, lots of clubs and live music to enjoy. Students will find that there are numerous places to hang out, study or eat, all close to home, including several vintage clothing stores and bookshops.

There are countless activities to enjoy year-round that change with the seasons. Attend a fair in the spring, watch some live theatre in the summer and go to a BBQ in the fall. In the winter, you can take a break from your studies and skate along the Rideau Canal or attend the annual Winterlude festival.

Sandy Hill is a bustling, vibrant neighbourhood known for its strong sense of community and village-like feel.

Other considerations when looking for a rental apartment

Student rental accommodations must meet your budget, of course, and should be in a great location. They should also be comfortable, convenient and affordable, as well as offer helpful services for tenants.

District Realty has several apartment buildings in downtown Ottawa that are within walking distance of the University of Ottawa campus.
