Talks have stalled between Canada Post and urban workers: management says

OTTAWA – Canada Post says contract talks with its urban workers have stalled.
The post office issued a news release Thursday evening saying the two sides remain far apart on several fundamental issues.
Canada Post says the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has rejected compromises proposed by management to address sick leave and staffing levels.
It also contends that CUPW refuses to discuss ways to reduce costs and address declining mail volumes and increasing competition.
The union issued its own update, saying workers will go on strike in Quebec City and Kitchener, Ont. starting late Thursday.
CUPW also says it is prepared to be flexible on its bargaining position provided that Canada Post is willing to address the problems its employees face in the workplace.
Workers were off Thursday at 13 smaller cities across Canada.
The communities are: Labrador City, N.L., Acadie-Bathurst, N.B., Summerside, P.E.I., Ste-Therese and Ste-Jerome, Que.; the Ontario cities of Thunder Bay, Hearst, Brantford and St. Thomas, Flin Flon, Man., Vernon, B.C., and the territorial capitals of Yellowknife, N.W.T. and Whitehorse, Yukon.
Canada Post has said the strikes have had a disastrous effect on customer confidence and the Crown corporation’s revenue since the first walkout last week.
