Toddler dies following Alexandria fire

The 22-month-old boy who was rescued from a burning home in Alexandria last week has died of his injuries.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario confirmed that Maxime Desjardins died this morning. The toddler had been in a coma since being airlifted to the hospital on Friday.

His mother, Sarah Cholette, and his siblings, 3-year-old Chloe and 8-month-old Jacob perished in the blaze.

Maxime’s father, Martin Desjardins, remains in Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital burn unit.

He was able to survive the fire after jumping out of the window with Maxime in his arms.

Prayer services were held Saturday and Sunday at the Sacré Coeur Church in Alexandria, the town of 3,000 people about 100 km east of Ottawa.

The Giant Tiger store in Alexandria is now accepting donations for Martin. So far, just over $1,600 has been raised.

The cause of the blaze isn’t yet known.
