Protest at Congolese Embassy turns violent

A demonstration outside the Congolese Embassy this afternoon turned violent.
About 300 protestors hurled rocks and sticks at police officers and the embassy on Range Road. In response, the officers, dressed in full riot gear, were forced to use pepper spray on the group. One person was arrested.
The demonstration began at noon as a peaceful protest on Parliament Hill, then activists began marching through the downtown core, causing traffic chaos.
Today’s demonstration mirrors a similar incident on December 6, when officers sprayed demonstrators after they began throwing rocks at officers and the embassy.
Demonstrators are speaking out against the recent election in the Congo, which they say was rigged. This afternoon, Congo’s Supreme Court ruled that Joseph Kabila is the winner of the presidential election.
