Ottawa, Hawkesbury hospitals going digital

OTTAWA, On – The Ottawa Hospital and the Hawkesbury District hospital are going digital, bringing electronic records to both locations and effectively turning them into wings of the same hospital.
Dale Potter CIO of TOH told 1310News patients will no longer be transferred between the hospitals with a clipboard attached to them.
“In many cases there is a clipboard which aggregates (sic) documents related to the patients care in another environment whether it be paramedic treatment if they are transported by ambulance,” Potter said. “Clinicians, as they arrive, digest that information and take decisions on what the most appropriate next step is.”
eHealth Ontario is using Ottawa as a training ground for the rest of the province.
Greg Reed, President of eHealth told 1310News, Ontario is a big step ahead of the rest of the country with 60% of family doctors using electronic records, more than the rest of the provinces combined.
“The ability to improve patient care through technology and innovation is the primary purpose of eHealth Ontario,” Reed said. “These announcements today mark two more in a series of connections between electronic health information systems in Ontario.”
Family physicians and ER doctors will now be able to have past patient records and get any test results easier and faster.
This is the first step in integrating all the hospitals in the Champlain LHIN.
