Tax Exemption elimination skating on thin ice

The Ottawa Senators appear to have more bench strength when it comes to opposition of a proposal by the Ontario Government to eliminate the 50% tax exemption for businesses who write off sports tickets. Many use them for marketing and entertaining clients.
Ian Lee of the Sprott Schiool of Business tells 1310News, “it violates a fundamental principle of taxation”. He’s referring to the Tax Act which was established in 1917.
There is no support for the move across the aisle at Queen’s Park.
Nepean Carleton M.P.P. Lisa Macleod calls the move a distraction ” from the Conservative motion that was calling for the continuance of a corporate tax rate reduction”.
Executive Director of the Greater Ottawa Chamber Erin Kelly tells 1310News her members have begun a letter writing campaign against the proposal and she says the Mayor is on board to fight the elimination of the exemption.
She tells 1310News that you can’t compare the impact on Ottawa to Toronto. “We’re a market of small businesses, so what you’re saying is you’re going to basically double the cost for businesses attending and hosting these games”.
Ottawa Centre Liberal M.P.P. Yasir Naqvi tells 1310News, “No decision has been made”. He says everything is on the table in terms of reaching their goal. “We are able to balance the deficit that the province is in by 2017-18”.
Naqvi also points out the province can’t move forward on the proposal without the support of the Federal government.
