OTTAWA – Firefighters battled a dangerous fire Monday in the city’s south end. A neighbour called 911 around 3 p.m. and reported smoke coming from 22 Kemp Dr.
Ottawa fire crews arrived on scene to find flames coming from the basement. Firefighters attempted to douse the flames, but had to quickly escape when the fire started to burn through the floor, posing a safety risk.
The fire gutted the house completely.
Mark Messier with Ottawa fire, tells 1310News, the fire started in the basement.
“We weren’t able to get to the fire, and it burnt through to the main level. Firefighters opened up the roof area above where the fire started, so we can apply some large volumes of water using aerial devices.”
No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
The fire is under investigation and damage has been estimated at $500,000.
