Kanata one step closer to new elementary school

OTTAWA – Kanata north could be getting a new elementary school.
Chronic overcrowding in Kanata schools has been on the front burner for parents and the issue was brought to the Ottawa Carleton District School Board Tuesday night.
Trustees have been wrestling with the problem and are hopeful that Tuesday night’s approval of a new school will allow Kanata to get caught up and ease the issue of students being elbow to elbow in class.
The plan would also see additions to South March Public and Earl of March. Both schools will have grades 7 through 12 by 2015.
In the south, Glen Cairn would become an intermediate school by 2013.
Transition teams will be put in place to help roll out the changes in a smooth fashion.
Kanata school board trustee Cathy Curry told 1310News, the changes will help with overcrowding problems.
“We are 800 pupil places short in Kanata north and full day kindergarten has to be fully implemented by September 2014. That means the remaining four schools in Kanata north will have full day kindergarten by 2014. At that point, we’ll be between 1500 and 2000 pupil places short.”
The next step is to add the three approvals to the board’s capital projects list which has to be submitted to the province by the end of May.
