Lambton Kent school board bans high jump after student death in eastern Ontario

SARNIA, Ont. – A southwestern Ontario school board is banning the high jump event at many of its schools.
The move comes after a Grade 12 student died earlier this month after landing awkwardly at a school practice in Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario.
Education director Jim Costello says the ban is temporary for now and only affects elementary schools at the Lambton Kent District School Board.
Costello _ a former track coach and phys-ed teacher _ says the event will continue at secondary schools since most of those teachers and coaches have the necessary training and certification.
The Smiths Falls student initially suffered some scrapes and bruises but later slipped into a coma and succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation is being conducted by Ontario’s coroner.
