OTTAWA – Organ transplant advocate Helene Campbell, 21, is about to give her first interviews since receiving her new lungs last month. The Ottawa woman had a double-lung transplant in April.
Campbell, her parents and her doctors will update the media on how she’s recovering at 12 p.m., Thursday at a Toronto hospital.
It’s been quite the week for Helene — yesterday, she had a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper where he and his wife, Laureen, awarded her the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The Prime Minister presented the award to a beaming Helene at her Toronto home-away-from-home saying “in recognition of your tremendous work raising awareness of the importance of organ donation and obviously your personal courage in all of that”.
Helene has been encouraging others to “give the gift of life” by becoming an organ donor.
Campbell has been keeping her supporters posted on her progress through her blog _ alungstory.ca _ and her twitter account, which currently boasts more than 14,000 followers.
