Ottawa students march in support of Quebec students

OTTAWA, ON.- A group of demonstrators held a four hour march on Wednesday night to show solidarity with the Quebec fight to end tuition fee hikes.

The protest drew in students, but also parents and grandparents.

At the height of the protest police said 600 people were marching.

The group made its way through downtown and over the bridge to Gatineau, and then protesters marched back to the University of Ottawa.

The group chanted loudly and banged pots and pans with wooden spoons, garnering lots of attention from onlookers.

Grandmother Marion Pollack was in Ottawa on business.

Although she is well beyond her university year she said she believes in the movement.

“I have children and grandchildren in my life and I want them to be able to afford education,” said Pollack. “And I think the student protest is the only way in which that’s going to be a reality.”

Pollack said she believes the movement has already grown beyond university campuses.

Wednesday’s protest was peaceful, but Ottawa Police kept a close eye on the group.

Dozens of officers rode alongside the rowdy crowd on bicycles.
