Holmwood tree removal temporarily on hold

OTTAWA – A last minute ruling by Environment Canada has led to a temporary reprieve for 60 trees on Holmwood Avenue.
Chainsaws and bulldozers were ready to topple and cart the trees away Monday, as the Lansdowne redevelopment project gets underway. The clear-cutting has now been delayed after an emergency ruling from Environment Canada, who want to make sure migrating birds wont be affected by the clear-cutting.
This comes after last week’s controversial cutting of trees in the same neighbourhood without consultation to local residents or the official green light from the city.
Glebe councillor David Chernushenko was at the site Monday morning.
“I get a sense that Environment Canada doesn’t want to be in the middle on a city project but on the other hand they have a job to do, whether they want to be here or not,” David said.
Last week, residents protested the tree removal on Holmwood by chaining bicycles to barriers at the site.
