New provincial funding announced for CHEO

OTTAWA, Ont. — New provincial funding for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario will allow staff to perform another 2,200 operations every year.

Premier Dalton McGuinty made the announcement at CHEO Tuesday afternoon.  The $10-million will be used to renovate and expand the day care surgery and post anesthetic care units.

“Demand is growing,” McGuinty told reporters. “We need to build more capacity when it comes to surgeries in particular.”

McGuinty stopped by a hospital playroom to meet with some patients before the announcement, which was attended by a handful of patients and their parents.

“We do everything we can … make every sacrifice that is necessary to ensure that our children receive the best possible care, should they be called upon to require that,” said McGuinty.

Monica Coyne’s son, Owen, had eight surgeries before the age of eight because of condition that caused a tear in his diaphragm.

“The decision of the Ontario government to fund additional operating room space here at CHEO is so important to our community so that our children can receive the surgeries as soon as they need them,” said Coyne.

The renovations are expected to be completed in 2015.
