Bruyère cutting 140 full-time positions

OTTAWA — The region’s rehabilitation and palliative care hospital is cutting 140 full-time jobs, as it tries to fit within the provincial government’s new hospital funding formula.

Bruyère Continuing Care is trimming more than $4 million from its budget. To do that, most of the job cuts will come to the ranks of Personal Care Attendants. Many will be replaced with new Registered Nurse positions, which the hospital insists will actually enhance the quality of patient care.

“The health professional providing care will have more skills,” said Dr. Chris Carruthers, hospital chief of staff. “Such as going from a Personal Care worker to an RPN or a nurse.”

The hospital will also move some inpatient beds to outpatient care.

“Recovering from a stroke, you would be (spending) less time in the hospital and start your outpatient treatment quicker,” Dr. Carruthers told 1310News.

Local CUPE representative Brian Grant told 1310News he could not comment on the cuts until after a meeting between the local union and the national representative.

This is the capital’s second round of hospital job cuts; in January, The Ottawa Hospital announced it was trimming 290 full-time jobs.
