Train derails on bridge over Bow River in Calgary

CALGARY – Emergency crews are at the scene of a train derailment on a bridge over the swollen Bow River in Calgary.
Police said there was structural failure on the Bonnybrook Bridge, but there were no details immediately available on the extent of the failure.
The City of Calgary’s emergency management director Bruce Burrell said the train cars are carrying a petroleum product.
He said the cars are not leaking but the bridge is failing and slowly sinking into the river.
No injuries have been reported.
The immediate area around the derailment has been evacuated and officials are making a plan to get the cars off.
The city’s busy Deerfoot Trail in the vicinity of the derailment was closed for the morning commute, and people were being asked to stay out of the area.
Four cars left the tracks at around 4:30 a.m. (MT), forcing the road closure.
Both the Both and Elbow rivers burst their banks within the city when heavy rain pounded southern regions of Alberta last week.
Police have not said, however, if flooding was responsible for the structural failure.
