Sens ranked as top Canadian sports team: ESPN

The Ottawa Senators have been named by ESPN The Magazine as Canada’s top professional sports team, and were rated ninth overall out of 122 teams.

The criteria for the rankings include affordability, ‘bang for the buck,’ fan relations, ownership, players and stadium experience.

Ottawa has climbed the ladder rather quickly over the last two years. The club ranked 42 in 2012 and 82 in 2011.

“Our team and staff are doing great work. We see it but it’s great that it gets validated by a reputable publication like ESPN,” said Senators President Cyril Leeder.

“We’re not really suprised. I think we’ve always prided ourselves as the fan’s team here and in the NHL.”

The Senators ranked very high in the categories of ‘bang for your dollar,’ fan relations, ownership, and coaching. Ottawa didn’t fair as well in title tracking and stadium experience.

But Leeder expects significant improvment in those areas over the next couple years.

“I think our chances of moving up in this ranking next year are very good.”
