Two winter storms have left Halifax nearly paralyzed by snow, and the cleanup could take weeks.
A winter storm left 20 centimetres of snow on the Nova Scotia capital on Sunday. That was followed by another storm, dumping an additional 60-70 centimetres in some areas of metro Halifax.
“We’ve had a few people who haven’t been able to make it in (to the station),” said Megan Groff, morning editor at News95.7 in Halifax. “Basically, yesterday was just a writeoff for a lot of people. A lot of businesses closed yesterday.”
Major shopping malls and some businesses re-opened, Thursday, but many shops remained closed because of staff who were still snowed in. The city’s universities remained closed for a second day.
Storm prompts flashbacks to “White Juan”
This week’s two snowstorms have dumped almost as much snow on Halifax as that city’s most memorable snowstorm, in 2004.
“Hurricane Juan came (and) then a few months later, they got hit with this epic winter storm, so everyone called it White Juan,” Groff explained to The Ed Hand Show. “It dumped about 100 centimetres of snow on the city, and…between the two storms we’re pretty much at that total.”
Halifax city officials say the cleanup from this week’s storms could take weeks to complete. At this point, their aim is to get streets cleaned up for the morning commute on Monday, March 23.
