Thousands turn out to launch Fete nationale festivities in Quebec

MONTREAL – Tens of thousands of Quebecers gathered Tuesday night in Montreal and Quebec City to kick off Wednesday’s Fete nationale celebrations.

Several popular Quebec musicians, including Nanette Workman, entertained the crown on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City while artists such as Gilles Vigneault performed in Montreal’s Place des Festivals.

In all, some 700 events are planned across Quebec today to mark the 181st edition of Fete nationale, once known as St. Jean Baptiste Day.

Both Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair are expected to take part in a parade through downtown Montreal.

Various francophone communities across Canada will also hold celebrations.

Some of the Tuesday night festivities in Quebec were spoiled by violent storms which left thousands of customers without electricity.
