Public school board trustees begin process to close some Ottawa schools

OTTAWA – The public school board begin a process tonight that could lead to the closure of eight Ottawa schools.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is looking to close schools with lower enrolment, and move those students to schools that can offer more programs, while other options include changes in grade structure or school boundaries.
The eight schools named for possible closure are:
- Century Public School
- D. Aubrey Moodie Intermediate School
- Grant Alternative School
- Greenbank Middle School
- J.H. Putman Public School
- Leslie Park Public School
- Regina Street Public School
- Rideau High School
The first two reviews begin this month. The Western Area review includes Bell, Merivale, Sir Robert Borden and Woodroffe Secondary Schools. The Eastern Secondary Review includes Gloucester, Colonel By and Rideau High Schools.
The school board says these areas were chosen due to “the accommodation pressures and school utilization rates and the opportunities to enhance student learning and consolidate excess pupil space by September 2017.” The board currently has more than 11,000 vacant spots.
Advisory groups will be formed and public consultation held over the next six months — the first in November.
Trustees are scheduled to make a final decision on which schools should close in March.
Schools slated for closure would be closed at the end of the current school year.
