39th edition of Winterlude underway

OTTAWA – Three weeks of celebrating winter in the capital began Friday, with chainsaws carving up ice blocks and DJ laying down some beats in downtown Ottawa.

The International Ice-Carving Competition takes over Confederation Park, after the One-Block Challenge. Both events see ice sculpters from all over the world show off their skills to create beautiful works of art that will be showcased in the Crystal Garden.

The official start of Winterlude began at 7 p.m., Friday, with a big carnival-style street party featuring DJs, a laser show and a headlining performance by Coleman Hell.

Winterlude festivities are focused in three main locations:

–The Crystal Garden in Confederation Park
–The Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park
–The Rideau Canal Skateway

Activities are also offered by Winterlude partners, at other locations around the city.
