The provincial government is investing in the renovation and expansion of the Blackburn Arena.
It will pay $1-million of the $3.7-million to turn the Blackburn Hamlet facility into a multi-purpose space with updated dressing rooms and an accessible entrance.
Overall, the 6,700 sq ft expansion will include a new multipurpose space for community use, a bigger main lobby and shared space for recreational and cultural events.
“The renovation and expansion of the Blackburn Arena will provide economic and social opportunities,” said Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Infrastructure. “It will also create jobs and improve a community hub that is focused on physical activity, health and wellness.”
The Blackburn Arena is part of a larger community hub that includes athletic facilities, a playground, community garden, public library, shopping centre and the ward councillor's local office.
“This recreational, cultural and community centre will provide an excellent mix of services for Blackburn Hamlet, and the entire area, and I am thrilled that the government of Ontario is supporting such an important project with a commitment of $1-million in our 2018-2019 budget,” added Marie-France Lalonde, MPP for Ottawa-Orléans. “Bringing to fruition these planned renovations and enhancements – this is the kind of community building we can all get behind.”
