New Nashville clinic seeks to ‘de-stigmatize’ abortion

NASHVILLE — A health care company known for its outspoken support of a woman’s legal right to an abortion is setting up shop in Nashville.

After launching clinics in the Washington, D.C., area, Atlanta and Chicago, Carafem will open its Nashville location Friday.

The move comes after the region’s only clinic still offering abortion services in Nashville temporarily stopped last year. The clinic’s suspension of services sparked concerns about women’s access to abortion in a Republican-dominated state where GOP lawmakers have fought to make the procedure more difficult to obtain.

Chief Operating Officer Melissa Grant says the launch was partly motivated after Carafem’s Atlanta clinic saw an uptick in clients when Nashville’s Planned Parenthood location briefly stopping abortion services.

Grant says abortion should be treated the same as any other medical procedure.
