Ottawa Centre MP McKenna’s office vandalized with obscenity

By Jenn Pritchard

Ottawa Centre MP Catherine McKenna is angry and disappointed after finding a vulgarity spray painted on the facade of her constituency office on Richmond Road.

She was visibly shaken as she addressed the incident, speaking with members of the media Thursday morning.

“It isn't about me,” she McKenna. “It's about what kind of politics we want in our country.”

The Member of Parliament noted that the most recent election was a divisive campaign with plenty of negative retoric. She explained that Canada needs to come together, without hate, vitriol and anger.

“I think if there is a way that everyone can reflect on how we want to do politics better and how we can have better discussions,” she said. “And how both online and offline we can stop this… this abuse. I don't think anyone should be subject to the abuses.”

McKenna explained that these types of situations just solidify her decision to get into politics.

“Some people clearly want to chase women out of politics, that's not going to make politics any better,” she noted. “I have two daughters. I have so many young women and women on my campaign of all ages. They believe in politics and so do I.”

But, she recognized that incidents like this need to be called out in a public forum.

McKenna has already been given added protection by the RCMP after an incident during the election campaign when she was accosted outside a movie theatre with her children.

She explained that normally, she's able to find the good in everything, but right now that's not an easy task.

“Look I'm tough, but I'm really sick of this,” the MP added.

A police report has been filed regarding the Thursday morning vandalism, but so far no information about possible suspects has been made available.
