Two Ottawa-area drive-ins reopening for season

As movie theatres remain closed because of the pandemic, two Ottawa-area drive-in theatres are set to re-open for the season.

The Port Elmsley Drive-In, between Perth and Smiths Falls, and the Skylight Drive-In in Pembroke will be playing their first double features of the year on Friday night.

The Ontario government allowed existing drive-in movie theatres to re-open on May 31, as long as safety measures were in place.

Both Port Elmsley and the Skylight have introduced safety measures ahead of reopening.

Guests will be required to stay in their vehicle for the duration of the film, while snack bars will remain closed. Both drive-ins are charging one price for an entire vehicle. The Skylight is also only allowing cars in every second space.

Skylight owner Kevin Marshall has a concern over reopening however.

“It's not just us, it's all the other drive-ins across Ontario,” Marshall explains.

He worries that if there is another big COVID-19 outbreak and it gets somehow linked to a drive-in, it would cost him his season.

Marshall is asking those planning on heading to the drive-in to only come in the same vehicle if they live in the same household.

Drive-in schedules are available on the Port Elmsley Drive-In and the Skylight Drive-In's websites.
