Calypso Waterpark not reopening this summer

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Fun in the sun will have to happen elsewhere for water lovers as Calypso Waterpark says it will not be reopening for the remainder of the 2020 season, the company announced on its website.

“Despite our comprehensive efforts, the Ontario provincial government has not allow the open of water parks this summer,” the statement said Wednesday. “Calypso will survive these tough times and we’ll be ready to welcome you back in 2021 with a splash.”

Further to that the park says its is very disappointed with the government’s decision.

“We expected to open with restrictions in stage 3 as outlined in the government’s plan, therefore we invested hundreds of thousands [of dollars] to prepare the park,” the statement continues. “While many similar businesses have beenallowed to open their doors, waterparks have been asked to remain closed. Even with a comprehensive reopening plan that was pre-approved early July by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the provincial government has put a hold on the waterpark industry in Ontario. We currently do not understand the reason behind their decision and we are requesting answers.

The park describes the impact of not opening as “immense.”

“We have requested a dialogue with the government to discuss the financial and economic impacts following their revised stage 3 reopening plan,” says Calypso.

The water park is located in Limoges, Ontario, about a half hour away from downtown Ottawa.

Season pass holders will be sent a newsletter with more details on what to do next.

Calypso opened in June 2010 has become Canada’s biggest water park.

The water park which cost $65 million to build, announced in July 2012 that it had welcomed its millionth guest.
