Stage 3 of Ottawa’s light rail project passes committee phase

By Alex Black

It's another step forward for Stage 3 of light rail transit (LRT) in Ottawa.

The city's transportation committee has voted in favour of the $3-billion project, which would extend LRT into Barrhaven from Baseline Station. The extension is expected to have seven LRT stations and a new Park and Ride at Barrhaven Town Centre.

The preliminary plan also calls for three new bridges over the VIA Rail line, which would eliminate the level crossings at Woodroffe Avenue, Fallowfield Road and along the Transitway.

The plan would also see 120 units of low-income housing in the Nepean Neighbourhood of Manor Village be demolished, in order to build the future Knoxdale LRT Station. Residents have started a petition, asking the city not to demolish their homes, saying it's impossible to find affordable housing in Ottawa.

The plan still has to be approved by Ottawa City Council, which also needs commitments from the federal and provincial governments.

The recommendations from the transportation committee will be brought before council on Wednesday, November 25, 2020.

The city is currently building Stage 2 of the LRT which will extend the Confederation and Trillium Lines.
