Two new public parks coming to Ottawa’s Chaudière Island

Two new public parks are set to open on downtown Ottawa's Chaudière Island after the city's Planning Committee waived a requirement for a parkland dedication.
The City of Ottawa says the dedication was for Zibi Ontario, the ongoing redevelopment of lands formerly occupied by the Domtar paper mill.
A waiver to the Parkland Dedication By-law is needed as the National Capital Commission will ultimately own and maintain the parks and facilities. The city says its approved agreement stipulates that, barring any future increase in density, Ottawa would not require any parkland dedication or cash-in-lieu of parkland for the development.
The west end of the island will be named Pangishimo Park, after the Algonquin word for sunset, and is expected to be open by the end of this year.
The park on the east end of Chaudière Island will be called Mokahan Park, after the Algonquin word for sunrise. That park is expected to be built and opened by next fall.
