Stolen vehicle recovered, driver charged after police chase in Nepean

By Mike Vlasveld

A 49-year-old Ottawa man is facing a list of charges after a stolen vehicle was spotted by multiple police officers, all of which its driver tried to get away from.

An Ottawa police officer first watched a vehicle being driven erratically on Strandherd Drive, Sunday, January 3, around 1 a.m. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it drove away. Another officer saw the same vehicle do a U-turn and drive off at a high speed on Woodroffe Avenue.

A third officer then found the vehicle and followed it into a residential area. That's when police say the driver lost control and drove into a snowbank. The officer got out to try and make an arrest, but the driver put the vehicle into reverse, smashing the police vehicle before getting out and running on foot.

The driver was arrested nearby. Further investigation showed that the plates and the vehicle were stolen.

Ryan Fulton has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance
  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Operation of a Conveyance while prohibited
  • Possession of Property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000 (two counts)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance
  • Breach of Probation
  • Failure to Comply with a Release Order

He was scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
