Gatineau, Outaouais region heading into 10-day lockdown before Easter long weekend

With Ottawa’s top doctor requesting the city move into the COVID-19 grey zone before the Easter long weekend, an official move to an upgraded coloured zone will be happening just across the river.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, Gatineau will be headed into the red zone alongside three other Quebec regions, in response to the rapid rise in COVID cases.

Premier Francois Legault made the announcement Wednesday — adding that Quebec City, Levis, Gatineau and the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais will be in full lockdown for 10 days as of tomorrow (until April 12).

“This means that in the coming days, hospitalizations will increase,” Legault said Wednesday. “We must act quickly.”

Non essential businesses, schools, theatres, museums, hair dressers, gyms, among others, are those that will close tomorrow as a result of the lockdown.

“We’ll also re-start financial help programs,” Legault added. “For places of worship, we’ll only allow a maximum of 25 people, and the curfew will now be at 8 p.m. again.”

Childcare will also only be reserved for priority workers. Parents who are not priority workers, however, are told to keep their children at home.
