The Special Investigations Unit has cleared the Ottawa Police Service in its investigation into the October 2020 death of a 23-year-old man that happened on Jasmine Crescent.
According to the SIU report released on Thursday, it could not find any reasonable grounds to charge officers in connection to the death of Anthony Aust.
On the morning of October 7, the police watchdog said OPS officers went to execute a warrant to search at 2020 Jasmine Cres.
While doing so, Aust jumped off the balcony.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers involved were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.
Police chief Peter Sloly released a statement following the report on Thursday, offering sympathies and condolences.
“We know this tragedy has deeply affected the Aust family and members of the community,” the statement said. “This incident has also affected OPS members. “The conclusion of the SIU investigation brings some measure of closure for all those who have been directly or indirectly impacted.”
Sloly added that OPS members are committed to working with community members to reduce the potential of such tragedies while rebuilding trust, enhancing duty of care and co-producing improved community safety and wellbeing.
