This winter’s ‘big one’ among Ottawa’s top 10 snowiest days on record, says Environment Canada

Ottawa residents are used to snow storms, but according to Environment Canada, this one is big even by capital region standards.

After several hours of heavy, blowing snow on Monday, January 17, 2022, the weather agency measured 41 centimetres (cm) of new snow at the Ottawa International Airport at 1 p.m.

Senior Climatologist David Phillips says he expects lighter snow to keep falling until about 6 p.m.

At 41 cm, Monday's snow event is already one of the 10 biggest in Ottawa's history. At times snowfall rates in excess of 10 cm per hour were reported in the city.

Phillips says it's not quite at the level of 2016's snow storm, which saw 51 cm fall in one day, but it could get close.

Even with the massive amount of snow on Monday, the City of Ottawa's seasonal snow tally is still below average, however. Phillips says there had only been 46 cm that had fallen on the city this winter.
