The Ottawa and District Labour Council wants to see more transparency from both the investigators of an explosion at Eastway Tank Pump and Meter Ltd., and the company's owner.
Eastway Tank Owner Neil Greene has issued a couple of press releases since the January 13 incident which left six people dead. In the first, he offered his condolences to the families affected and said he would cooperate with all investigations into the incident. He then sent out a second release to deny allegations made by former employees who accused Eastway Tank of being lax when it came to following safety protocol.
“Mr. Greene has to do better than just sending out press releases that talk about how concerned he is,” Ottawa and District Labour Council President Sean McKenney told CityNews' The Rob Snow Show on Monday, January 24. “He needs to show his face and he needs to speak to the media and answer some important questions.”
McKenney adds, the families affected by the tragedy deserve answers, some of which also need to come from those investigating the explosion.
“[Better] communication from each of those levels of investigators, whether you're fire or the Ministry of Labour,” he said. “Certainly, I don't think anybody expects that anything that they would release would jeopardize any part of the investigation, but just an openness and transparency [is needed].”
McKenney is hoping to see multiple, parallel investigations, in order to yield as much information as possible about what happened.
