NCC-run beaches in Quebec now open

By Dani-Elle Dubé

NCC beaches in Quebec are open and ready to welcome swimmers and dippers.

In its announcement issued on Friday, June 17, the NCC confirmed the opening of its beach season, adding that lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at several sites across the province.

Until Monday, September 5, swimmers are welcome at:

  • Meech Lake: O’Brien Beach and Blanchet Beach Class;
  • Philippe Lake: Breton Beach and Parent Beach for the public, and Smith Beach for campers only;
  • La Pêche Lake beach

During the swimming season, beaches are tested every week for bacteriological water quality. The results are updated on the NCC’s website.

The open water swimming pilot project at Leamy Lake and Meech Lake continues in 2022.

The pilot allows for open water swimming in safe environments.

However, swimmers taking their vehicles to Meech Lake, Philippe Lake and La Pêche Lake will have to pay parking fees which can be paid at the meters loaded at the lot entrance gates.

Free parking will be offered for vehicles displaying an accessible parking permit at the paid parking lots.

For swimmers with limited mobility, the NCC says Philippe Lake’s Breton Beach is the best as there is a paved path and a wheelchair ramp.

A beach wheelchair is available open request at the lifeguard station.

City-operated beaches, however, will open on Saturday, June.

Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 11.a.m to 7 p.m. at Mooney’s Bay, Britannia and Petrie Island.

Westboro Beach, however, will be closed for the entirety of the summer season due to construction.
