One person is dead following a bedroom fire in Sandy Hill.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a low rise apartment complex on Wiggins Private, off Goulburn Crescent and Chapel Crescent, around 10:12 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

Firefighters were first alerted to the fire by the complex's monitoring company then began to receive multiple 9-1-1 calls from people reporting heavy black smoke and flames coming out of a window on the first floor.

Firefighters entered the building and located a fire in the bedroom of an apartment on the first floor. The fire was contained to the bedroom and crews began a search for occupants through heavy smoke conditions.

One person was located inside the apartment and pulled to safety by firefighters to be assessed and treated until the Ottawa Paramedics Service arrived.

The paramedic services has confirmed to CityNews Ottawa that one person died as a result of the fire, pronounced dead on scene around 10:30 p.m. Ottawa police say the deceased person was a 67-year-old woman.

Ottawa police say a second person suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fire.

Because someone died, the Ontario Fire Marshall is now investigating the fire, with support from the Ottawa Police Arson Unit.

Firefighters used high pressurized fans to ventilate and residents have since returned home.
