Centretown West fire victim identified as 17-year-old Ottawa resident

One person has died after an overnight fire in the Centretown West area, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) has confirmed to CityNews Ottawa.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) was called to the area of Booth Street at roughly 1 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, due to a working fire on Booth Street, north of Gladstone Ave.

Officers closed Gladstone Avenue, Booth Street, Willow Street, and Poplar Street and asked the public to avoid the area for the initial investigation.

Police said there was extensive damage to the property once the fire was distinguished, and it was then that the body was discovered.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Hussein Hamam of Ottawa.

The OPS Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation with support from the OPS Arson Unit.

OPS said it is now seeking the public’s help for information about the overnight fire.
