Annual army run to close many downtown Ottawa roads

A number of roads in downtown Ottawa will be closed this weekend for the annual Canada Army Run.

Thousands of racers and military supporters will run, walk, and roll through the scenic streets of the capital along 5K, 10K, and half marathon routes.

Starting at 6 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 17, roads near the start of the race by Ottawa City Hall will close with many roads in between like Laurier Ave., Wellington St., King Edward Ave., and the Sir George Étienne Cartier Pkwy closing periodically throughout the day before the race ends near the National War Memorial around 3 p.m.

Race organizers have asked that drivers plan accordingly, consider alternative routes, and if possible, avoid the affected areas during this time.

Residents in the area are also being warned of cannon fire within the closed-off areas to kick off the challenges at 7:45 a.m., 8 a.m., 8:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 9:25 a.m., and 9:30 a.m.

The Canada Army Run Official Opening Ceremony takes place at 7:25 a.m. before the 5k race kicks off the day.
