City committee approves new plan for waste collection
A City of Ottawa committee has approved some changes to household waste collection, which could see Friday garbage days being scrapped in a few years time.
The City’s Ottawa’s environment and climate change committee has approved a plan to eliminate Fridays for garbage collection and instead having waste collected Monday to Thursday throughout the week.
If approved by Ottawa City Council next week, the new schedule would come into effect in March of 2026 and would redirect 60,000 tonnes of waste to two private landfills.

City staff said the extra cost would be offset by gained efficiencies and would help extend the life of the Train Road Landfill for a few more years.
Ottawa residents will be informed of their new garbage collection dates before the changes take place.
The City plans to stop taking leaf and yard waste on the green bin.
Garbage will still be taken every two weeks, and the green bin will stay on its weekly pickup schedule.
