Heritage properties set to become new high rise building

Three heritage properties on Kent and MacLaren streets are set to be transformed into a new 27-storey building.

Ottawa’s Built Heritage Committee approved the plan Tuesday which is set to develop a 289-unit, 27-storey building in their place.

The buildings being altered are at 359 Kent Street as well as 436 and 444 MacLaren Streets.

According to the committee report, the building at 359 Kent Street, known as the Legion House, will be integrated into the construction of the new high rise.

Legion House was originally built as the headquarters for the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion
Command. It also held administrative offices for the Service Bureau and offices for the Canadian Legion publication: The Legionary.

The proposal also included restoring the two properties at 436 and 444 MacLaren Street and integrating them into the overall landscaping and site design.

It was previously approved by the Planning and Housing Committee last November.

City council still needs to approve it at their next meeting on Jan. 24.
