Less drunk drivers in eastern Ontario this year: OPP

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have released their statistics on the number of impaired drivers on eastern Ontario roadways and say the numbers are down this year compared to last.

Police say that so far in 2024, there have been 184 impaired driving incidents in areas stretching from Quinte West, Ont. to the Quebec border and up the Ottawa Valley.

By this time last year, police say there had been 232 impaired driving cases.

“The decline is positive news, but one impaired driver is one too many,” says OPP inspector Walid Kandar. “Being impaired while driving, whether by alcohol or drugs, can have deadly consequences for the driver, their family or others on the road.”

OPP officers say they will continue to conduct RIDE programs across eastern Ontario in an effort to discourage impaired driving.

“And to catch those who continue to make poor decisions,” added police.

Police advise the public that if they are drinking or consuming drugs, to have a designated driver, call a cab or use a ride-share service.

Police say that if you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.
