South Korean family home in Barrhaven target of racist attacks: Police

Ottawa police have laid charges in a hate-crime case that happened on June 7 in the Barrhaven community.

According to officials, two individuals have been charged in relation to hate-motivated vandalism that happened at a home on Maynooth Court. A post on X from police reads that the home belongs to a South Korean family.

“We want to express our deep concern and assure you that we are fully aware of the serious impact such hate crimes have on the Asian and other communities in Ottawa,” officials said.

Officers received an online report on June 7 and an investigation was started by the Hate and Bias Crime Unit.

Jamie Darlene Quigley, 46, and Matthew Galipeau, 36, both from Ottawa were charged with:

  • Mischief/damage to property not exceeding $5000
  • Harassment by threatening conduct to other person

Both are scheduled in court on July 24.
