Three-alarm fire leaves 3 Nepean townhomes damaged

An early morning fire in Nepean has left multiple people without a place to live.

Ottawa fire Services (OFS) responded to a townhouse complex on Chesterton Drive, between Mulvagh Avenue and Southview Crescent, around 2:50 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.

Fire dispatch had received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting flames coming from the roof of the six unit complex, which was confirmed by fire crews arriving on scene.

A second alarm fire was declared at 2:56 a.m., which was quickly followed by a third alarm to dispatch additional resources to the scene. Firefighters began a fast-attack and advanced multiple hose lines onto the flames.

Firefighters opened up walls and ceilings to get the flames, which spread into neighbouring units on each side, and hydro was shut down for the entire complex.

At 4:06 a.m., firefighters had completed their searches of the units and confirmed there were no occupants inside.

The fire was declared under control by 4:30 a.m. and was contained before it could spread past the two adjoining units where the fire started.

A fire investigator has responded to the scene and victim assistance is helping those who have been displaced. The homes in the complex are social and affordable homes run by Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) for low-income people, according to a tweet by Ward 9 Councillor Sean Devine.

“OCH staff immediately responded and were on site to assist tenants and partners as needed,” a statement from the organization to CityNews reads. “OCH continues to work with our partners at Canadian Red Cross to support tenants who have been displaced, and we are fully cooperating with emergency services including Ottawa Fire Services in their ongoing investigation.”

There are no reported injuries.
