Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a second man in connection with a fatal boat collision on Bobs Lake, that killed three people on the Victoria Day long weekend.
Three young adults died, and five other people were taken to hospital just after 9:30 p.m. on May 18 in the Bucks Bay area of Bobs Lake, north of Kingston. An open-bow fishing-style boat and a speed boat collided.
Police say a 27-year-old man from South Frontenac Township was charged with failing to exhibit a stern light on a power-driven vessel underway, failing to exhibit sidelights on a power-driven vessel underway and operating a non-human-powered pleasure craft without a personal flotation device or life-jacket of appropriate size for each person on board.
They say the accused is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 13, 2025.
In October, police arrested and charged Matthew Splinter, 44, of South Frontenac Township with three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death.
He also faces three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, three counts of impaired operation causing death and three counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm.
The charges laid come five months after the initial collision. McConnell said that was due to how complex the investigation was. He noted the remote nature of the lake played a part in needing longer to conduct a collision reconstruction and using additional resources like the OPP marine and technical collision units.
