Smoke, flames seen coming from apartment building, 911 callers reported

Multiple 911 callers told Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) they could see smoke and flames coming from an apartment building in Ottawa’s Overbrook community on Dec. 23.

People reported to firefighters at 12:08 p.m. that a high-rise in the 200 block of Donald Street was on fire and flames could be seen coming from a top-floor apartment. Crews confirmed flames and smoke were coming from the 22 floor of the 22-storey high-rise once on scene and additional resources were dispatched by 12:12 p.m.

Using a fast-attack method, crews had to break the door to make their way inside the unit, where they were met with near-zero visibility from thick, black smoke.

An advanced hose line was set up and the flames were under control by 1:24 p.m. Firefighters did two full searches of the unit and no one was found inside.

Fans were used to ventilate the smoke out of the structure and air quality was monitored before people were allowed back inside.

An OFS investigator was sent to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
